How to Apply for VA Benefits

(Students who are applying for VA benefits for the first time)


Chapter 30 - Active Duty Veteran

  • Complete application (available online or at the Office of Registration and Records in 110 Ceres Hall)
  • Provide copy of DD-214, copy 4
  • Provide copy of Kicker Contract, if applicable
  • Mail to: VA Regional Office, P.O. Box 66830, St. Louis, MO 63166-6830
  • Once you receive your Certificate of Eligibility, you must bring a copy to the NDSU VA Representative (110 Ceres Hall) so that your enrollment is certified and you begin receiving benefits. Allow 10-12 weeks for processing.

Chapter 31 - Veteran with a Service-Related Disability

  • Call 1-800-827-1000 to schedule an appointment with a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor and to complete an application
  • If you are found eligible, the appointment information will be forwarded to the NDSU VA Representative

Chapter 35 - Dependent of a Veteran

  • Call 1-800-827-1000 to schedule an appointment and to complete an application
  • Once you receive your Certificate of Eligibility, you must bring a copy to the NDSU VA Representative (110 Ceres Hall) so that your enrollment is certified and you begin receiving benefits
  • Chapter 35 benefited students may be eligible for a North Dakota tuition and fee waiver if:
    • The student is the dependent of a North Dakota resident veteran who was killed in action or died from wounds or other service-connected injuries, was a prisoner of war or was declared missing in action
    • and, the student is accepted for enrollment into any North Dakota state-supported institution of higher education or state-supported technical or vocational school
    • Contact the NDSU VA Representative for additional information and to learn more about eligibility

Chapter 1606 - National Guard and/or Reservist (not activated)

  • Complete application (available online or at Office of Registration and Records in 110 Ceres Hall)
  • Provide copy of Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE)
  • Provide copy of Kicker Contract, if applicable
  • Mail to: VA Regional Office, P.O. Box 66830, St. Louis, MO 63166-6830
  • Once you receive your Certificate of Eligibility, you must bring a copy to the NDSU VA Representative (110 Ceres Hall) so that your enrollment is certified and you begin receiving benefits. Allow 10-12 weeks for processing.

Chapter 1607 - National Guard and/or Reservist (activated)

  • Complete application (available online or at Office of Registration and Records in 110 Ceres Hall)
  • Provide copy of Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE)
  • Provide copy of Kicker Contract, if applicable
  • Provide copy of Activation Orders
  • Provide copy of DD-214, copy 4
  • Mail to: VA Regional Office, P.O. Box 66830, St. Louis, MO 63166-6830
  • Once you receive your Certificate of Eligibility, you must bring a copy to the NDSU VA Representative (110 Ceres Hall) so that your enrollment is certified and you begin receiving benefits. Allow 10-12 weeks for processing.
