Greg McCarthy

Dr. Gregory J. McCarthy serves as Associate Vice President for Interdisciplinary Research within the Division of Research, Creative Activities and Technology Transfer. He earned a B.S. degree in Geology from Boston College in 1964, and a Ph.D. in Solid State Science from Pennsylvania State University in 1969. He spent the next ten years on the faculty of Penn State University's Materials Research Laboratory, where his research emphasized crystal chemistry and synthesis of ceramic materials, as well as new materials for safe disposal of high-level nuclear wastes.

In 1979, McCarthy came to NDSU to teach in the Departments of Chemistry and Geology and establish research programs in X-ray analysis of solids, mineralogy, and the reuse or safe disposal of solid industrial wastes. His research, done with the assistance of more than 75 undergraduate and graduate students, has brought international prominence to NDSU in X-ray identification and phase quantification, and the characterization, utilization, and disposal of solid by-products from combustion and gasification of coal and the cleaning of power plant flue gases. He has authored or co-authored over 190 papers and book chapters, and edited or co-edited fourteen books and two scientific journals. McCarthy also served as Director of the North Dakota Water Resources Research Institute for nine years and Chair of the Department of Chemistry for eight years.
