Frequently Asked Questions

How are rooms assigned?
We strive to make the best possible assignment available related to your preferences. Your contract is given priority based on the date we receive your application and application fee. We can not guarantee your hall(s) or roommate(s) preferences. Once your assignment is made, we are not able to go back and re-consider the assignment when new cancellations are received in our office. You will receive an assignment packet in the mail as soon as we have made your assignment.
Assignments are made throughout the summer, in the order in which the applications are received. To date, we have sent assignment letters to those who applied prior to March 2, 2008. If you did not apply before this date, you may not get an assignment until later in the summer.

What if my roommate cancels?
If you call your roommate and he/she tells you he/she has decided not to attend NDSU, ask him/her to call the Residence Life Office (1-800-572-8840) and cancel his/her contract if this has not already been done. The next person in line by priority date will be assigned to your room.

How can I make a room change?
In general, requests for room or roommate changes cannot be honored at this time. If you wish to make a roommate change, you may speak to your Hall Director when you check into your hall this fall. He/she will honor your request, if possible.

What is a triple/quad room?
If your Assignment Notice lists two roommates' names and phone numbers, this means you have been assigned to a triple/quad room. Triple/quad rooms are larger than double rooms and easily accommodate three to four people. If we are in overflow (not enough regular rooms) housing, a fourth person will be assigned to that room until a permanent room is available for that person.

What is overflow housing?
Due to growth of the university, there will be more students requesting to live in residence halls. When all available beds have been filled, a variety of different areas are used. In most halls this means utilizing study lounges as student rooms, converting larger double rooms to triples, or larger triple rooms to quads. All overflow locations on campus are secure and offer the same amenities as permanent locations. If you are assigned to a permanent location in a double w/study (larger double room) or triple room, you will have a student in overflow housing placed in your room.

Can I cancel my contract?
All first year students are required to live on campus, pursuant to the Living on Campus Policy. Returning or transfer students who wish to cancel their assignment for the fall semester may do so. Notify our office in writing of your intent to cancel no later than July 1 to receive a refund of your application fee. Cancelations may be made between July 1 and August 22, but the application fee will be forfeited.

What is my new mailing address?
When living on campus, please use the following address format:

  1. Your name (no nicknames)
  2. Room number and hall
  3. Hall PO Box number
  4. Fargo, ND 58105-4 digit PO Box number

PO Box numbers are as follows:

Burgum 5348
Churchill 5077

Seim 5477
Sevrinson 5438

When do I pay my bill for room and board?
Refer to the specified dates on the "2008-09 Room/Meal Payment Schedule" included in your assignment letter. These are the final rates as approved by the State Board of Higher Education.

What about hall dues?
A yearly charge, maximum $85, for your hall dues is placed on your NDSU account on or before the first day of classes. The hall dues pay for hall activities and programs planned by the hall government and the Residence Hall Association (RHA), and for items the hall government can purchase such as sports equipment, cooking utensils, games, etc. Your hall dues also pay for coinless laundry service in your building, newspapers in each residence hall, and the Residence Life Cinema television channel. Activities and equipment are available to all residents of the hall, and all students are encouraged to participate in hall government.
