Overflow Information

Sometimes the student demand for housing is greater than the number of spaces we have to offer on campus. As such, we may find ourselves needing to utilize overflow spaces to accommodate our residents.

Knowing that the best educational environment for students is on campus, the first priority is to create and utilize additional bed spaces to house overflow students. In some halls, study lounges are converted to student rooms. In others, larger double rooms are converted to triples or larger triple rooms are converted to quads. In either case, the overflow spaces are secure (the door can be locked), and they provide most, if not all, the amenities that students would otherwise expect in a residence hall. The larger spaces in these rooms provide ample living room for the students "permanently" assigned to these spaces as well as the "overflow" students joining them until their permanent location becomes available.

In the event that our on-campus overflow spaces are exhausted, we secure bed spaces for students in local hotels. In doing so, we hire additional student staff (Resident Assistants) to live in the hotels and serve in the same capacity as those on campus. Also, we hire additional professional staff to supervise staff and students these areas. Additionally, we provide a shuttle service to and from campus, as well as a laundry pick-up and drop-off service for all students. Students are also able to make use of the hotel pool and/or continental breakfast (if available). In other words, we go out of our way to make sure that those who are in an overflow assignment have a positive experience. As permanent spaces open on campus, students staying in the hotels are given priority in securing an assignment on campus.
