Vital Statistics
The official recording of vital statistics
-- namely data about births, deaths, marriages, and divorces --
is the responsibility of individual states. Then, through cooperative
agreements with the states, the Federal government obtains the records
for statistical purposes (see the National
Vital Statistics System website).
