About Vital Statistics

The official recording of vital statistics -- namely data about births, deaths, marriages, and divorces -- is the responsibility of individual states. Then, through cooperative agreements with the states, the Federal government obtains the records for statistical purposes (see the National Vital Statistics System website).

About Components of Population Change

Births and deaths are two of the three components of population change. The other component of population change is migration.
