National Student Exchange
ABSTRACT: The National Student Exchange is a program that allows students to study at any participating institution in the nation, while earning reciprocity or paying home tuition.
GENERAL: Since its inception in 1968, more than 100,000 students nationwide have participated in this exchange. There are nearly 200 member institutions of the program that can be found in 48 states (North Dakota and Delaware do not currently house participating institutions) as well as Puerto Rico, Canada, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. It is an opportunity for NDSU students to engage in a more diverse academic experience, while opening our doors for students from across the nation to see what North Dakota has to offer. The benefits to our students and our University are direct. Students will diversify their education and cultural experiences in a manner that is less expensive than international options.
PROCESS: Student Government would facilitate the process for application and coordination with the national organization. This process would likely extend throughout the year with the hope of making the program available for students in the fall of 2013. Startup funding could be covered from within the Student Activity Fee; however the goal would be for an on-campus department to take over the low annual operating costs. A partnership would need to be formed with an entity/staff member on campus to take care of the administrative operations of the program. Potential options for this collaboration could be the Academic Resource Center or Bison Connection.
