My Teaching Philosophy

It is my goal to guide students through their academic and personal journey at NDSU and to give them the tools to become independent thinkers to solve problems; to apply microbiology to their daily lives as well as their workplace; and most importantly, to be good citizens and human beings. I like to incorporate “stories” about the everyday activity of microorganisms, good and bad, into my lectures so as to raise them to their rightful place in society. I feel students control their own destiny, and I just drive the bus; they can choose to stay on for the ride or jump off at any time.

My Path to VMS

I received my B.S. in Bacteriology from NDSU in 1975. After that, I worked as a microbiologist at the North Dakota Department of Consolidated Public Health Laboratory and at Cooperative Power Association coal-fired electric generating plant. I was a stay-at-home mom for a number of years, and I worked part time as a Pharmacy technician. In 1993, I enrolled in a graduate program at NDSU, completed my M. S. in microbiology, and in 1996, I was hired by the Department of VMS to teach microbiology courses. The rest is history in the making.

Other Things

I live on a lake near Detroit Lakes with my husband, Tom, a veterinarian. We have 5 adult children; most of them are gainfully employed and all living in different states. When we aren’t attending graduations, weddings, or family functions, we like to travel, especially to Mexico to explore the fascinating underwater world via scuba diving. In the summer, I like to garden, play racket sports, bike, and mow our 1.5-acre lot on my John Deere tractor. I love to follow the Minnesota Twins, I attend the NCAA Frozen 4 hockey tournament every year, and, of course, I am a true supporter of the NDSU Bison. I sincerely enjoy getting to know students, and I welcome visitors to my office most any time.
