Peterson received a Fulbright Junior Lectureship in American Studies, at the University of Oldenburg, in the Federal Republic of Germany, for 1982-83. He taught courses in America Since World War II, American Values, and the History of Families. He is still in regular contact with some of his former colleagues.

guest professor at the Institute of Mineralogy, University of Hanover and researcher in the mineral resource group, of the Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe (BGR) - the German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources. The work being carried out was to understand the geological process that concentrated the high-tech metal germanium in an ore deposit in northern Mexico.
