Who: Rachel Herme, Major: French Education, Hometown: Farmington, Minn.
Why did you choose NDSU?
“I came to NDSU because I knew the university had a really good reputation and wanted to see it for myself. I felt comfortable and everyone was so welcoming. I could tell all the students and faculty were proud to be a part of the university. I decided this is where I belong and now I have that same pride.”
How did you pick your major?
“I randomly started taking French in ninth grade because it seemed like an interesting and beautiful language. I really looked up to my French teacher because she had such a love for teaching and the language itself, and I decided that it was the right career path for me. “
Activities:
Bison Ambassadors (a student public relations group sponsored by the Alumni Association and Office of Admission), Student Government, women’s choir and Habitat for Humanity
Advice you wish you would have received as a freshman:
“Don’t close any doors. College is a new opportunity. Every day new doors open. It might seem scary at first, but so many people have been in your position and want to help you and give you opportunities. Never give up and never underestimate yourself. There are so many great things you never knew you could do until you get to college.”
Future plans:
She wants to study in France her junior year. After graduation she would like to teach high school French, and then earn master’s and doctoral degrees and teach at the university level.
Something most people don’t know about you:
“Most people at school probably don’t know I was a dancer for years. I started when I was five and quit in 10th grade; but my passion is still there, and I hope to take more dance classes in the future.” Herme participated in ballet, tap, jazz and dance line.
Your favorite aspect of NDSU:
“The friendliness and helpfulness exhibited by each person I meet. Although it is a large university, there is definitely a small town feel on campus; and each person on campus that I have contact with, whether it’s a professor, adviser, mentor or peer, I always feel very comfortable interacting with them. I haven’t had a bad experience with a person on campus since I’ve been here.”
