Hospitality Student Association

The Hospitality Student Association (HSA) is open to all majors and minors in the program. They meet monthly, bring in industry speakers, tour local operations, plan and undertake study trips, and plan and produce the Food and Wine Show each spring.



The leadership team plans monthly meetings to provide an opportunity for members to network outside of the classroom. Besides the monthly update on organizational business and activities, the meetings may also include industry tours, educational sessions, guest speakers, volunteer opportunities, or other social activities.

PineappleIn the fall, students plan a professional development event to benefit all HTM majors and minors. In Fall 2013, HSA hosted a career fair involving area and regional hospitality businesses. This was a great opportunity for HTM students to see the breadth of careers available, as well as a chance for our industry counterparts to meet the talented students we had. In Fall 2014, HSA invited seven hospitality professionals to conduct mock interviews and critique student resumes. This provided students important feedback on their oral and written communication skills. Many have been able to secure jobs and internships as a result of these professional development opportunities.

Wine GlassThe Food and Wine show is the group's primary fundraising event held annually in the spring semester. Students work with area businesses to organize a culinary tasting event featuring a variety of wines and appetizers. Restaurants and catering operations in the area often feature their signature dishes and/or new menu items. Students also hold a silent auction featuring hospitality packages that may include free or discounted hotel stays, foodservice coupons, gourmet ingredients, or small kitchen/service wares. Proceeds are used to support HSA activities, trips, and other hospitality experiences.

Starting in 2014, part of the proceeds has been invested into student scholarships. HSA provides two academic scholarships amounting to $500 each and are awarded to one freshman or sophomore and one junior or senior in the program.

Students plan an industry field trip in the spring to experience hospitality outside of Fargo. Field trips have included Minneapolis, Duluth, and Alexandria.
