Interior Design Program Mission
We are developing professional interior designers qualified by education, examination, and experience to identify research and creatively solve problems relative to the function and quality of people's interior environments.
Interior Design Program Goals
1. Educate students through an integrated comprehensive study of the theoretical and practical concepts of interior design, building systems, and interior components and construction.
2. Develop student ability to synthesize and effectively communicate information, develop critical thinking skills and initiate lifelong learning skills.
3. Instill in students the desire to practice professional ethics to create socially responsible design solutions emphasizing sustainability, diversity and global perspectives.
Interior Design Program Overview
Located in the Apparel, Design and Hospitality Management Department and accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA), the Interior Design program focuses on improving the quality of life and protecting human health and safety through design of the interior environment. In a challenging program responsive to the changing needs of the interior design profession, students study design fundamentals, theory, process, communication, research, and technology to identify and solve problems for a wide range of physical interior environments for all individuals regardless of socioeconomic background or situation.
The first two years of the 4-year undergraduate bachelor’s degree in interior design introduce the fundamentals of design, visual and technical communication techniques and theoretical and practical applications. Upper-division course work is focused on a series of integrated studio experiences that culminates in a capstone interior design project. Studio experiences require that each student be exposed to a variety of projects at several different levels of complexity and different client project goals. In addition, students complete a three (3) credit field experience in the summer between the junior and senior year.
