Update on Fall Instruction - 7/8/20

This information was shared with students and families on 7/8/20

Dear students and family members,

I am writing with updates on the planning currently underway for a return to in-person instruction this fall. NDSU's planning is guided by best practices and advice from state and federal public health agencies.

While there are still some unanswered questions, NDSU's planning is beginning to take shape. I will write again in the coming weeks with more detail.

Classroom Instruction
NDSU will resume face-to-face instruction to include HyFlex Educational opportunities this fall as announced by President Bresciani in an email on June 25. Nearly every classroom on campus will be equipped with technology so that students may participate in their classes both in-person or from a distance. Students do not need to do anything in advance to participate in HyFlex. Not all labs or other experiential classes will be offered in a HyFlex format. Students who are not able to participate in labs or experiential classes in a face-to-face setting should contact their academic advisors for suggestions about rearranging their schedules.

Face Coverings
NDSU strongly encourages all students, faculty, staff and visitors to wear face coverings when they are on campus and unable to maintain an appropriate physical distance. In some spaces, such as the classroom, students and faculty are required to wear face coverings. Other places that require face coverings include meeting rooms and lounges when a 6-foot distance cannot be maintained.

Students and employees should plan to supply their own face coverings and may wish to have more than one on hand to allow for adequate laundering.  Contact Disability Services at 701-231-8463 for accessibility considerations for students who may have an inability to wear a face covering. More information on face coverings can be found here.

Residence Life and Dining
Residence Life will continue to provide students the flexibility to choose between single or double rooms in the Residence Halls as available. Students who have concerns with living on campus are asked to discuss options with Residence Life.

Students will have two options for move in. There will be optional drop off of belongings in early August and scheduled move ins from Aug. 20-Aug. 22.  Sign up begins today:

Students who need to quarantine during the semester will do so in their own rooms. Rooms will be set aside for on-campus students who may need to isolate at any point during the semester. Meals will be delivered to the rooms and Residence Life will provide daily wellness checks to students in these situations.

Dining Centers will have both eat in and take-out options this fall. Check here for more information on Dining Center operations.

Well-being
As always, the President's Council for Well-Being is focused on strengthening the well-being of our campus community. You may find some of the resources they've compiled here especially helpful during this time. Watch your email in the next day or so for a link to a survey to help better understand the opportunities to support the health and well-being of our campus this fall.

Please continue to submit questions to NDSU.fall2020@ndsu.edu. We will monitor this email address, reply to your inquiries individually and distribute the answers more widely through emails throughout the summer.

Sincerely,

Laura Oster-Aaland, PhD
