Advising Appointment Tips

After you have made an appointment with your advisor, make sure to arrive on time and prepare in advance. Students who prepare in advance for their advising meetings save time and get more out of their meetings with their advisor.

  •  It is important to keep all of your academic records and documents in one place so you always know where they are. Look over any materials you have from previous advising appointments for any special instructions or planning you may have done previously. Bring these documents and other records with to your meeting. This will help you and your advisor remember what you talked about at your last meeting.

  •  Look over your Academic Advisement Report (on Campus Connection) or curriculum guide and create a draft of the courses you plan to take. Your advisor will not pick your classes for you, but will clarify program requirements and course sequences regarding the classes you want or are required to take.

  • Check your account for any holds and contact the appropriate department(s) for more information about the hold. Some holds may prevent you from registering for classes.

  • Make a list of any questions you may have about NDSU policies, your curriculum, life and career goals, or anything you wish to ask or share with your advisor. Your advisor can help you with many other things than just semester course planning!

  • Follow up with any suggestions your advisor gives you during your meeting as soon as possible (contacting other campus resources, departments, etc.). This includes registering for classes as close to your registration appointment time as possible. Registering as soon as possible gives you a better chance at securing your spot in the class.

  • Notify your advisor of any changes in your academic progress, course selection questions, or consult with them about any other issues that may impact your academic performance.

  • Visit the ARC if you need assistance identifying your advisor or have any questions as you prepare to meet with your advisor.
