R. J. Kern is a Minneapolis based visual artist whose work explores ideas of home, ancestry, and a sense of place through the interaction of people, animals, and cultural landscapes. Kern’s practice specializes in people and animal portraiture, landscape photography, and outdoor studio lighting techniques. He was recently awarded the CENTER Curator’s Choice Award in 2017, and was the official artist for the Minnesota State Fair in 2019. Kern published two photo books in 2018, one for his series The Unchosen Ones, exhibited at the Plains Art Museum in 2019, and The Sheep and the Goats, portions of which were presented at Ecce Gallery in Fargo in 2015. Kern has exhibited around the globe, and is among the invited artist for High Visibility: On Location In Rural America and Indian Country, the upcoming featured exhibition at the Plains Art Museum running November 23, 2020 - May 30, 2021. Kern will present an artist talk about his photographic work and studio practice. Students, faculty, and members of the community are invited to join in person as space allows, or through a live webinar hosted on Zoom.
