Frank J. Cassel Research Award

Cassel Undergraduate Research Awards

Would you like to conduct your own research project?

Apply for the Department of Biological Science Cassel Undergraduate Research Award.   This award provides the recipient with funds for research expenses and a personal stipend.

Who can apply?

Any undergraduate student with a declared major in the Departmental of Biological Sciences with junior or senior standing, as of Fall semester, 2017 (i.e., a minimum of 60 earned credits by the beginning of Fall semester 2017).

What is the award?

Successful applicants will be awarded $2000 - $3000.  Approximately 40% of awarded funds will be used for research expenses and 60% of funds will be awarded as a stipend to the awardee at the completion of the project.

How can you apply?

·         Discuss your research interests with your advisor or other Department of Biological Sciences faculty.  Your faculty mentor can help you to turn your “research idea or interest” into a “research project” that is doable within the budget and time-frame of the award.

·         Submit the following materials to the departmental office (201 Stevens Hall) by March 10, 2017:

o   A 1-page proposal that includes your hypothesis, general research methods and expected outcomes.  Your proposal must include the signature of your faculty mentor, verifying that they have reviewed your proposal.

o   Your resume

o   Your unofficial transcripts

 Review Criteria

1.      Originality of the research question

2.      Feasibility of the research plan

3.      Quality of the proposal (well written, clear hypotheses and methods)

Research must be completed by May 15, 2018 or December 15, 2017 if you are graduating in Fall semester 2017.
