Derek Lehmberg, PhD
MBA Program Director
Associate Professor of Management
Strategy and International Business Research
Lehmberg’s research interests primarily lie at the intersection of strategic management and international business, and in particular, Japanese business. Bilingual in Japanese and English, Lehmberg bridges language and cultural barriers to provide opportunities for English speakers to better understand the Japanese context and business. His research examines strategic management issues including diversification, investment under uncertainty, innovation, and crisis in the Japanese business context, frequently using data only available in Japanese.
Extending his interest of management in crisis situations, Lehmberg is currently working with his NDSU colleague, Chanchai Tangpong, on research examining corporate turnaround. In the future, Lehmberg plans to extend this stream of research to examine similarities and differences in drivers of turnaround success in firms outside of the United States.
As director of the NDSU MBA Program, Lehmberg has facilitated the development and launch of the renewed MBA Program, which features an 8-week course format and new elective courses in new and relevant areas for the NDSU community.
Lehmberg has authored over 40 Journal papers, conference papers, book chapters, and case studies.
Lehmberg’s teaching case studies have been used by thousands of business school students in numerous Universities.
Lehmberg is involved with building and maintaining business and cultural ties between people in the upper Midwest and Japan. He has met with Japan-related groups visiting North Dakota including Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) and the Consulate-General of Japan in Chicago.
Lehmberg has chaired the Association of Japanese Business Studies (AJBS) annual association in 2017, and continues to work with the AJBS leadership team.
