The Bison Fund is a student organization committed to developing students into capable and successful employees that are looking for a career in business and finance. As a member, you will be exposed to our $1.3 million dollar portfolio that we manage for the Larson Foundation, Institute of Regional Studies, and North Dakota State University. Throughout your time, you will learn the process of how to identify and research potential investments, while applying tools like Excel and Bloomberg at your disposal.
New members will begin with updating financial models and monitoring earnings calls of the companies we are currently invested in. More experienced members will find themselves doing research on new companies, contacting management, and building new financial models. Our organization is setup to mirror what it would be like to work in a real investment shop.
In between earnings season, our meetings will be spent developing our members’ networking skills. Students will see developments through resume and cover letter workshops, LinkedIn help, and guest speakers that work in the industry. We also help students put what they’ve learned into action through various networking trips to Minneapolis, Chicago, New York and Omaha where we visit a variety of firms to show the many different routes students can take in finance as a career.
The 2017-2018 school year offered many great opportunities to our members. Outside of our annual trips to Minneapolis, Chicago, New York, and Omaha, we attended several CFA Society conferences, put on a Navigating the Financial Markets event, and coordinated a charity fundraiser. The fund added three new companies to its portfolio and developed a new investment strategy. Five Bison Fund members placed 2nd at the CFA Research Challenge competition in Minneapolis, Minnesota. These opportunities gave great networking opportunities to our members and added to the reputation of this organization.
Students from all majors, undergraduate or graduate, are encouraged to join. The Bison Fund holds weekly meetings at 7 pm every Tuesday in the Barry Hall Commodity Trading Lab, room 124.
