ABET Accreditation

The program leading to the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE) degree at NDSU is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org. ABET accreditation is important, as it ensures that our program: 

  • Has received international recognition of its quality.
  • Promotes “best practices” in education.
  • Directly involves faculty and staff in self-assessment and continuous quality improvement processes.
  • Is based on “learning outcomes” rather than “teaching inputs.”
  • Can more easily determine the acceptability of transfer credits.

Through application of ABET’s quality standards, we seek to achieve a better-educated, geographically mobile, and diverse technical workforce well prepared to advance innovation and excel professionally in fields of critical importance to society. Earning a degree from an ABET accredited program:

Program Educational Objectives

Graduates of our B.S. in Civil Engineering program are expected within a few years of graduation to:

  • Solve current and emerging problems in civil and environmental infrastructure.
  • Conduct sustainable engineering design incorporating diverse perspectives to improve quality of life.             
  • Engage in ethical and professional practices, realizing the broader societal implications of civil engineering.
  • Serve the profession through collaborative work, leadership roles, professional licensure, advanced degrees, and lifelong learning.

Student Outcomes

To foster attainment of the educational objectives, the program curriculum has been developed and organized to ensure students will achieve the following outcomes by the time of graduation:

    (a) an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering
    (b) an ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data
    (c) an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability
    (d) an ability to function on multidisciplinary teams 
    (e) an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems
    (f) an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility
    (g) an ability to communicate effectively
    (h) the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context
    (i) a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning 
    (j) a knowledge of contemporary issues
    (k) an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.
