Prof. Wenjie Xia is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at North Dakota State University (NDSU) starting in fall 2018. Dr. Xia obtained his Ph.D. from Northwestern University in 2016 and his B.S. from Case Western Reserve University in 2011. Prior to joining NDSU, he was an MGI-CHiMaD (Materials Genome Initiative – Center for Hierarchical Materials Design) Fellow at National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) from 2016 to 2018. Dr. Xia is currently also a faculty in the interdisciplinary graduate programs, Materials and Nanotechnology (MNT) and Biomedical Engineering (BME) at NDSU. He has joined the Center for Engineered Cancer Test Beds under NDSU’s Grand Challenge initiative since 2018.
Dr. Xia’s research interest lies in understanding the complex behaviors of structural materials via bottom-up predictive modeling and data-driven approaches for design and prediction of their performance in structure/infrastructure, energy and bioengineering applications. Dr. Xia and his group aim to develop multiscale modeling tools and establish innovative materials-by-design frameworks to facilitate design and development of high-performance multifunctional materials by integrating fundamental theories, multiscale modeling, computation, and experiments. Dr. Xia’s research is broadly under the scopes of the Materials Genome Initiative and the University’s Grand Challenge Initiative.
Dr. Xia has authored over 25 peer-reviewed papers published in prestigious journals in nanoscale science and polymer research, such as ACS Nano, Nano Letters, Macromolecules, etc. During his doctoral and postdoctoral study, Dr. Xia has received multiple awards including the MGI-CHiMaD fellowship, Walter P. Murphy Fellowship and Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Students Abroad. He has been selected as the finalist for the APS Frank J. Padden Jr. Award for excellence in graduate polymer research in 2016. Dr. Xia has frequently served as a peer reviewer for over 30 top leading journals, such as Science Advances, Nano Letters and ACS titles. He also chaired several conference sessions and delivered over 30 presentations at seminars and national and international conferences.
