Writing Workshops

Writing Workshops focus on important research-writing genres and essential skills that support successful scholarly communication. Each workshop combines relevant information, discussion, and collaborative activities to help participants refine their writing skills. Workshops may be offered as a series spanning several weeks or as one-day intensive sessions.

IMRAD+

IMRAD reports are important for research writing because they provide a clear, standardized structure that helps researchers organize and communicate their findings effectively. By dividing a paper into Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion sections, writers can logically present the purpose of their study, explain how it was conducted, report what was discovered, and interpret the significance of the findings. The Center for Writers' IMRAD+ Workshop Series offers a five-part exploration of the research-writing process tailored to manuscripts, theses, dissertations, and other scholarly documents that follow the IMRAD+ structure—Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion, plus Abstracts. This in-person series provides participants with dedicated guidance and hands-on practice for each major section of a research paper, helping writers develop clarity, coherence, and discipline-specific effectiveness in reporting their work.

Literature Reviews

The Center for Writers’ Literature Review Workshop Series provides a roadmap for developing effective literature reviews. In the “Orientation to Literature Reviews,” participants learn about the different types of reviews and how to scope their topic to discover and evaluate relevant sources. Next, “Literature Review Matrices” introduces strategies for tracking details from readings, identifying recurring themes, and organizing information in a clear, structured way. Building on these skills, “Synthesizing Content” focuses on connecting ideas through thematic, chronological, methodological, or comparative lenses to create a cohesive argument. Finally, “The Language of Literature Reviews” highlights techniques for writing with clarity and logic, emphasizing the importance of key terms, transitions, and conjunctions to guide readers smoothly through the analysis.
