Hello, my name is Allen J Irish and I am a counselor here at NDSU. I attended Minot State University, where I earned my Bachelor’s Degrees in Psychology and Sociology. After several years of working, I returned to school and earned my Master’s Degree in College Counseling from Minnesota State University Moorhead. I am currently working on his PhD. In Counselor Education and Supervision.
I have been working in the mental health field for several years and have worked with individuals who have had issues with addiction, homelessness, personal, and emotional issues. Prior to coming to NDSU, I worked as a Case Manager for individuals with a severe mental illness as well as being the Director of a Residential Care Center in Dickinson, ND.
I grew up in a small town in North Dakota and am happy and excited to be back in the Fargo/Moorhead area. My professional areas of interest include working with individuals struggling with personal identity/sexual orientation issues, depression, relationship issues, and a vast range of other concerns. I have a special place in my heart on the topic of bullying. I have conducted two separate research studies on the issue of bullying at the college level. I was trained in EMDR in October of 2016, and since that time, my work with college students has been primarily been focused on helping college students overcome their past experiences (for example, family of origin issues, abuse in all forms, bullying, rape/assaults, and car accidents).
Personally, I enjoy being outside and enjoying nature and the calming aspect that it creates within myself. Spending time with my partner and our two dogs is something that I appreciate every day. A few of my personal interests are camping, fishing, boating, hunting, gardening, and cooking.
