Avenues of Scientific Discovery
Monday, April 12, 2021 - Tuesday, June 30, 2020
Academic Level: Non-Credit
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year we are offering our presentations to high school students virtually, through recorded videos.
I ❤ Science
The objective of Avenues of Scientific Discovery is to show that science is fun and interesting. We want to make science approachable for high school students, which might guide them into a field of study they would not have otherwise known about or been interested in. More important, showcasing different scientific fields of study allows high school students to experience what science is all about in postsecondary education and the real world.
Avenues of Scientific Discovery is a graduate student run event open to local high school students and the Fargo-Moorhead-West Fargo community; however, this year schools nationwide may take part in our virtual event. Videos will be posted to a special Avenues of Scientific Discovery playlist in our YouTube channel. We encourage school districts and teachers to use these videos to promote a love for science. Also use the comment section below each video to pose questions to the graduate students.
Share the excitement for what you learned in each session using #AOSD on your social media accounts.
There is no registration required to participate in this event. Use the registration link below to go directly to our YouTube playlist, which will have videos posted beginning April 12, 2021.
Get a feel for how fun science can be. Explore 10-minute virtual demonstrations of different scientific fields conducted by NDSU graduate students in those programs. All virtual workshops will be listed here as soon as they are approved. We will provide links directly to each video from this section.
Due to the pandemic, this year we are offering our presentations to high school students virtually, through recorded videos. Selected proposals will work with NDSU Office of Teaching and Learning staff to create short workshop videos (10 minutes or less) demonstrating fun and interactive components of science. Workshop video proposals are due February 26, 2021
The theme of this annual event is "I ❤ Science".
Workshop leaders are usually graduate students in science-related field of study who donate their time to record a virtual demonstration. Workshop leaders may be individual graduate students or may consist of a group of individuals from Graduate Student Associations within each college.
This event is an excellent way for graduate students to build their Curriculum Vitae (CV), to gain experience in public outreach/extension, leadership, and teamwork, and to practice presenting their research in an engaging and educational way! There will be gift card prizes and trophies available for the best demonstrations. All demonstrations will be judged by multiple NDSU STEM faculty according to an established rubric.
Think about what you do in your lab or classroom. Is there an activity you could modify for a hands-on workshop that could be done by a group of enthusiastic high schools students? We need graduate students like you to lead hands-on video demonstrations for these budding scientists.
Graduate student booths are eligible to win an NDSU Bookstore gift card (1st place - $200; 2nd place - $100; 3rd place - $50) and a trophy/medal for the best demonstrations. Prizes will be divided among students hosting a particular demonstration. Trophies are handed out individually.
Sponsor Avenues of Scientific Discovery
To continue making an impact on the high school students, Avenues of Scientific Discovery needs your support. This conference is a prime opportunity to develop interest in science and science-related careers. There are no minimum or maximum sponsorship requirements for this conference. Companies and organizations can provide a monetary donation in any amount they are comfortable with. This year, as a sponsor, your organization's name will be added to each video we produce.
