Risk Management for Kids
This course is an effort to change the citizenry of tomorrow by providing youth with the tools to comprehend, and be more engaged in, managing their own risk. This current generation (Generation Z) has more access to information, tools, and networks than any other previous generation. Their interaction, both face-to-face and in cyberspace, is fundamentally different than past generations and they marshal technology to make more savvy choices. As such, it is important to provide this generation of students an understanding of the importance of managing their own risk and the ways in which they can do so as they develop through the K-12 system and into adulthood.
This course will focus on simple ways in which educators can integrate risk understanding and individual risk management into existing K-12 curriculum. The goal of this course is to empower educators to create better informed and more prepared citizens through enhancing students’ understanding of different risks and their responsibility for their own risk management.
Course participants will complete activities that will facilitate their understanding of risk and risk management specific to the grade level and topical material they cover in their teaching. This course will work for all educational levels and most subjects. Course participants will complete a development plan (through their work in the seven lessons) that will ready them to integrate specific lessons into their next teaching engagement. The course instructor will work with course participants individually to guide the development plan process to meet their specific grade level and topical material needs.
This course is comprised of seven one hour lessons (hosted on Blackboard), each lesson will require 30-60 minutes of pre-lesson material review. An initial pre-course reading of 5 hours is also required. The lessons can be completed on the course participant’s timeline but all coursework must be completed no later than July 30, 2019.
