Course Description:

The course is designed to provide meaningful activities, instructional strategies, materials, and research to enhance the teaching skills of Pre-K- 12th grade educators in subjects related to food, land and people.  The participants will have educational tools to help their students better understand the interdependence of agriculture, the environment, and human needs through lessons in multiple curriculum areas: science, mathematics, social studies, geography, technology, and more. More specifically, this course will provide educators with resource information that will assist them in the instruction and presentation of the “Land and Water Units.” The textbook for the course will be “Resources for Learning” but will include additional materials from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and Project WET, books, kits, maps, PowerPoints and other materials.


1.  Understand how natural and environmental concepts can be integrated into the curriculum. To heighten the awareness level of where we live, our relation to it, and the use and replenishment of natural resources.

2.  Use lessons available in FLP, guide group activities (large, small, and cooperative,) provide for individual differences and learning styles, and evaluates students’ learning.

3.  Identify and use appropriate learning activities to integrate social concerns and social perspectives regarding soil, water and people issues.  

4.  Develop understanding, thinking skills, creativity, and improve communication skills in the learning environment with students.

About The Instructor

Virginia Deitz

Virginia earned her M.A. & B.A. from Minnesota State University in Reading with concentration in Learning Disabilities, Elementary & Special Education. She received several awards including the ND Teacher of the Year in 2001 and has served as President of the ND Reading Association. Virginia has 41 years teaching experience in ND Public Schools.
