Course Description:

This course is designed to provide School Counselor candidates who do not have a degree in Teacher Education with an opportunity to study, reflect, question, become knowledgeable about, and develop skills in instructional planning, methods and assessments. Major topics include: characteristics of effective teaching; student diversity, social justice and how understanding students influences learning; planning for instruction; lesson preparation; classroom management; and assessment of student learning.

Objectives:

Students enrolled in the class will…   

  1. Create short-range lesson plans that are based on subject matter, needs of learners, community and school needs and curriculum goals.
  2. Reflect on his or her current practice and the adjustments and revisions that become necessary in working with a diverse group of students.
  3. Acquire and utilize a wide range of instructional strategies and models suitable for the elementary through high school setting.
  4. Reflect upon teaching strategies and student learning outcomes.
  5. Make effective decisions about instruction and assessment through the careful consideration of student information.
  6. Evaluate and create reliable, valid, and fair assessment measures.
  7.  Align instructional objectives, instruction, and assessment.

About The Instructor

Denise Lewis

Denise received her M.A. with emphasis in Secondary English Education from Kent State University and her B.A. in English & Music from Heidelberg College, Ohio. Denise has 17+ years teaching experience.
