Course Description:

A teacher’s job is more than simply teaching, it is to help students learn.  This on-line course provides an understanding of the importance and benefits of effective planning and teaching strategies, a positive class climate, and student engagement and learning through classroom activities and technology.  Classroom teachers will learn how to plan courses that help students learn, how to establish a positive class climate, and how to research and implement a variety of interdisciplinary classroom active learning activities, strategies, and technologies that facilitate improved academic performance. This course will also provide teachers an opportunity to discuss, critically think, and begin to implement these active learning strategies into their respective course curricula.

The students will be able to:

  1. develop and plan an effective course.
  2. design ways to help establish a positive climate.
  3. explain the research and rationale for incorporating active learning strategies in the classroom.
  4. demonstrate a variety of active/cooperative learning activities and strategies in the classroom.
  5. utilize a variety of technology platforms to help increase student engagement.

Course Materials & Text:

1. Gmail account (e-mail address).

- I have found that most Gmail accounts tied to a school DO NOT work with Google Classroom, our course learning management system.  If you have an account through your school, I am happy to try, but just know that most of the time it doesn’t seem to work.  If that happens or if you don’t already have a Gmail email address, you will simply need to make a Gmail account (free) so I can add you to Google Classroom.

2. Reliable access to the Internet and a computer.

3. Text: None.  Materials will be disseminated electronically.
