Course Description:

Refresh, Renew, and Recharge for the coming school year by attending the North Dakota Council for Teachers of English Summer Conference 2018! This year's conference features Donalynn Miller, The Book Whisperer, as our keynote speaker and award-winning Young Adult novelist Chris Crutcher as our featured author. The Red River Valley Writing Project teacher consultants will share the latest on the NWP's College, Career, and Community Writers Program, with free instructional resources from elementary through college.

Target Audience: Middle School and High School ELA Teachers, Reading Teachers and Specialists, Curriculum Coordinators, Post-Secondary Instructors, Library Media Specialists, Pre-Service Teachers, and anyone who supports literacy from kindergarten through college in the state of North Dakota.

Participants will continue to develop in:

  • recognizing the individual differences that distinguish one student from another and taking account of these differences in their practice,
  • understanding new developments in the teaching of English Language Arts,
  • learning new strategies for monitoring student learning,
  • strengthening their teaching through reflection, and
  • participating in online learning communities about their reading.

Required Student Resources:

July 1-August 1:  Read one of the books by each speaker (Miller and Crutcher), then join the virtual roundtable for that book and engage in a discussion prior to the conference. Based on your reading, describe one classroom activity you will do with your class and get feedback from another participant online prior to the conference.
