Course Description:

A health or family and consumer science teacher’s job is more than simply teaching; it is to help students learn to make use of the information learned and become health literate.  This on-line course provides an understanding of the importance and benefits of student engagement, skills-based teaching, and content-specific learning in activities.  FACS and health teachers will learn how to research and implement a variety of classroom activities, strategies, and technologies that facilitate improved academic performance and retention. This course will also provide teachers an opportunity to discuss, share, critically think, and begin to implement these activities into their respective course curricula.

Individuals will be able to:

  1.  design skill-based lessons using skill cues.
  2.  explain the research and rationale for incorporating active learning strategies in the FACS/health classroom.
  3.  demonstrate a variety of active/cooperative learning activities and strategies.
  4.  utilize a variety of technology platforms to help increase student engagement.
  5.  discuss a variety of topics with peers through the discussion board.

"Useful lessons and experiences for educators!"

Required Student Resources:

1. Reliable access to the internet to class

2. Text: None.  Materials will be disseminated through Google Classroom.

3. Gmail email address (for Google Classroom site use)

-  Most Gmail accounts tied to a school DO NOT work with Google Classroom, our course learning management system.  If you have an account through your school, I am happy to try, but just know that most of the time it doesn’t seem to work.  If that happens or if you don’t already have a Gmail email address, you will simply need to make a Gmail account (free) so I can add you to Google Classroom.
