Remote Access to ECE Server and Software

Please report any issues or requests.  We cannot make this system work the best as possible if we never hear about things that are not working properly or that could be improved.

Two methods to connect:

Remote Desktop Connection is installed by default on most Windows computers, and there are options available to install on Mac or Linux.  In Windows 7 the application is often right on the Start menu, and if not there it can typically be found under Start – Programs – Accessories.  All of the newer Windows operating systems should also have the ability to type in the beginning of the word and it will pop up any applications it finds that match what you re typing.

The address of Remote Server is eceremotehost.ece.ndsu.nodak.edu

We recommend selecting the Show Options button before connecting, choosing the Local Resources tab and then pushing the More… button to connect local Drives for ease of copying files to and from the server.

When you’re ready, push the Connect button.  You should then be prompted for login.  Making sure the “Sign in to:” shows AD, you should be able to use your normal NDSU login credentials.  If it is not showing AD for some reason, just type in your username as AD\username.

At this point you should be logged in and faced with a Windows Desktop which will have a few software icons showing.  You should now be able to run any of the software applications.

If you connected your drives from the Local Resources previously, you should see them listed (i.e. from File Explorer).  In the following example the Remote Desktop Connection was made from a computer named ECE241196449, and any of the drives visible on that computer can now be reached from inside the Remote Deskotp Connection as well.

Go to http://eceremotehost.ece.ndsu.nodak.edu/rdweb

Enter your normal NDSU login credentials, making sure to include ad\ at the beginning of your username.  The AD\ tells the system to log in with your NDSU account and is required.  Lower-case letters (ad\) will also work.

After login, click on the ECE Software icon.  Most browsers at this point will download a small file or at least ask if you want to.  Go ahead and do so or just run or open it depending on the options.  If you download a file you will then need to run the file that was downloaded.

You will get a warning message about connecting which is fine, you can Connect, or recommended is first push the Show Details dropdown and make sure the Drives box is checked to connect your local computers drives for easier access to copy files to and from the Remote session.

A login screen will appear, and you should enter the same credentials you used in the earlier step.

At this point you should be brought into a Windows Desktop with the various ECE software applications available to run.

Other Notes

Currently this server is considered a pilot system.  Hopefully we will work out issues quickly, but there is definitely some possibility for things to not work as expected due to it being a large many-concurrent-users setup.  If you encounter any issues, please contact ECE IT staff.

Where possible personal files should be removed from the server when you are done with your work.  We will be taking limited measures to preserve data, but cannot guarantee everything will be maintained.  The best location to keep data if necessary would be in your Desktop or Documents folders.

You will not have unlimited space available on the server, so if you are working with extremely large data sets you may need to contact ECE IT staff to see if something can be arranged.

If there are other applications which you feel would be beneficial to have installed on this system, please contact IT Staff to make a request.  It is not guaranteed to be installed, but it will be considered.  You will be informed of the decision either way.  Don’t request applications that aren’t used for ECE class or research purposes, however.
