Programs :: Science Outreach and Recruitment
Purpose and Goals

Science outreach and recruitment programs are coordinated through the Technology Transfer/Science Outreach and Recruitment (SOAR) office. The objective is to offer programs that stimulate interest in science, engineering, and mathematics (SEM) for students and faculty. Awards are "seed" rather than sustaining grants. Their purpose is to initiate work that will become competitive for institutional, state, national, or other continuing support.

Between 1992 and 1995, six (6) programs were offered: Expanding Your Horizons (EYH), Women In a New Generation of Science (WINGS), Science Bound, Advanced Undergraduate Research Awards (AURA), Students in Technology Transfer and Research (STTAR), and Faculty Laboratory And Research Experience (FLARE). EYH and WINGS graduated to external funding in 1995. Faculty Laboratory Innovative Teaching Enhancement (FLITE) was added in 1996.

SOAR Goals:

Develop an individual's career interest in research by providing a positive mentor relationship and the opportunity to participate in original research projects.

How SOAR Works:

UND and NDSU faculty researchers serve as mentors for these programs. Awards are competitive and are made to the successful applicants. Supply money is available for the mentor.
A faculty review committee ranks the applicants. All programs give priority to under represented groups in Science, Engineering and Mathematics, North Dakota residents, and people enrolled or employed at one of North Dakota's institutions of higher education.
· Awardees and mentors meet to determine that the mentor relationship is appropriate.
