Black Opera Jacket

Coat, evening. Made of black braid and cording arranged in a striped design on a black net background. Trimmed with black silk-covered ovals through which black braided cords with fabric ball trim has been threaded. A v-opening at the center back and shaped to fit over a bustle. Neckline, front opening and lower edges of the sleeves are trimmed with pleated black silk organza ruffle. c. 1880s

The coat was worn by the donor’s great-grandmother, Jessie Mason Webb.
