Stefan Vetter, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, North Dakota State University, will present a seminar entitled, "A Multidisciplinary Approach to Understanding the Molecular Mechanism of the Receptor for Advanced Glycation Endproducts".

The Receptor for Advanced Glycation Endproducts (RAGE) is a multi-ligand, cell surface receptor and recognizes several extracellular ligands that are associated with tissue injury. Overactivation of RAGE contributes to the development and progression of a surprisingly broad spectrum of diseases, including vascular disease, diabetic complications, neurodegeneration, and certain cancers.
The presentation will focus on our multidisciplinary approach to understanding two specific aspects of RAGE.: 1) How does the receptor interact with structurally dissimilar ligands? 2) How can we develop small molecules that block RAGE activation and could become therapeutically useful?
