Department of Biological Sciences (Conference/Workshop/Seminar)
Carolyn M. Bauer, PhD., Postdoctoral Scholar in the Greives Lab, Department of Biological Sciences, North Dakota State University, Fargo, will present a seminar entitled "Maternal Effects of Stress in the Degu ("Octodon degus")".
Maternal care significantly impacts offspring fitness. In rodents, stressed mothers lick and groom their pups at lower rates, and pups receiving insufficient amounts of licking and grooming develop highly reactive stress responses. These affected pups will have high stress hormone levels as adults, which can have severe consequences on their future fitness. I examined the relationship between stressed mothers, maternal care, and the offspring stress response in the degu ("Octodon degus"), a caviomorph rodent native to Chile.
