Science, Religion and Lunch Seminar: The Fantasy of Viking Atheism in the Modern White Supremacy Movement (Conference/Workshop/Seminar)
The modern Aryan movement is split into many different subgroups, many of whom are united in the conviction that the Judeo-Christian faith is alien to the character of Germanic people. There are some interesting attempts to return to the pantheon of the Nordic gods – in fact, several Chicago schools now employ Karl Seigfried, a Pagan godi, as chaplain and faculty - but many modern “heathens” perceive the Norse faith as mythology rather than religion and prefer to think that the ancient Nordic warriors of their imagined ethnic history were actually atheists, Nietzschean nihilists who did not “believe in anything but their own power and ability”.
In my talk, I will look at this phenomenon from a medievalist perspective and cast some light on the origins and narrative contexts of the recorded incidents of atheism in Old Norse literature.
