Biographical & Type Information - P

Paiva, Charles A. (b. 1878; d. 1919) - Some work on aquatic and semi-aquatic Heteroptera. Collection in the Zool. Survey of India, Calcutta.

Palisot de Beauvois, Ambroise Marie François Joseph (b. 1752; d. 1820) - Horn et al. (1990) indicates that some of his Coleoptera collection went via Dejean to the Museum of Natural History, London (BMNH), but no mention is made of his Heteroptera specimens. Palisot de Beauvois did not designate types, and in most cases it is impossible to tell how many specimens he had when the descriptions were made; in a few cases, he lists multiple localities thus indicating that he had more than one specimen. So, in nearly all cases, the types should be considered to be STS until LT designations are made. Caution also should be used in determining the type locality of various species; there are many strictly New World species cited from Oware [Nigeria], and strictly Old World species cited from Saint-Domingue [Haiti]; also some of the species cited from Saint-Domingue [Haiti] are actually confined to North America or South America. Griffin (1937) and Menke (1963) give information on publication dates of some papers. Citations: Thiébaut de Berneaud (1821), Cuvier (1824), Swainson (1840), Rose (1850), Urban (1903), Merrill (1937), and Papavero (1971).

Panzer, Georg Wolfgang Franz (b. 1755; d. 1829) - Collection may be in the Zoologisches Museum, Humboldt Universität, Berlin (ZMHB). Saunders (1888) provides an Index to the names, and Sherborn (1923) provides information on the dates of publication of Panzer’s Fauna Insectorum Germanicae. Citations: Duméril (1823), Anonymous (1829), Sturm (1832), Swainson (1840), Ratzeburg (1874), and Strecker (1878), Eisinger (1919), and Bonnet (1945).

Parshley, Howard Madison (b. Aug. 7, 1884, Hallowell, ME, USA; d. May 19, 1953) - Citations: Usinger (1954) and Mallis (1971).

Pennington, M. S. - Collection was purchased by money from the Drake bequeath, U.S. National Museum of Natural History (USNM).

Péneau, Joseph - (b. ?; d. 1971) - Citation: Anonymous (1971). After his death, Péneau’s collection was given to several colleagues in Angers (Maine et Loire), it is now probably lost except for a few specimens dontated or sent in exchange to certain workers. A few specimens may be in MNHN.

Perris, Jean Pierre Omer Anne Edouard (b. 1808; d. 1878, Mont-de-Marsan, France) - Collection was originally given to Dr. Émile Gobert whose collection ended up in many places, but according to Horn et al. (1990), the Rhynchota was given to M. Royer, Moret sur Loing. His collection may now reside in the Ecole d’Agriculture, Montpellier, France (EAMF). Citations: Anonymous (1878a, b, 1880, 1882), Kraatz (1878), Lichtenstein (1878), Mulsant (1878), Fauvel (1879), LaboulbPne (1879), and Pouillaude (1919).

Perroud, Bénoit Philibert (b. 1796; d. 1878) - His collection along with that from Montrouzier was given first to his son, then to Schouteden; most is probably now in the Musée Royal de l’Afrique Centrale, Tervuren, Belgium (MRAC); some may be in Leiden. Citations: Anonymous (1878a, b, 1879), Fauvel (1878), Kraatz (1878), Mulsant (1878), and Musgrave (1932).

Perty, Joseph Anton Maximilian (b. 1804; d. Aug. 8, 1884, Berne, Switzerland) - Collection was deposited in the Mus. Bern; some types were deposited in Munchen. Citations: Anonymous (1884a-d) and Papavero (1971).

Pic, Maurice (b. 1890; d. 1957) - Collection is conserved in the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris (MNHN). Citations: Anonymous (1958a, b, 1959), Sachtleben (1958), Schmidt (1958), Villiers (1958), and Lindroth (1959).

Picco, Leonello (b. 1876; d. 1921) - Collection resides in the Museo Civico di Zoologia, Roma, Italy (MCZR).

Pirán, A. A.  (b. May 30, 1908; d. Jan. 9, 1981) - Many are in the Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales Bernardino Rivadavia (MACN).  See Pastrana (1980).  See Grazia, 1986, for comments on pentatomid types. Also, see Bachmann (1999) for list of types in MACN.

Poisson, Raymond A. (b. Feb. 18, 1895, Briouze [Orne], France; d. Nov. 28, 1973, Lucon, France) - Many papers on the Gerromorpha and Nepomorpha. Collection was sold at auction in 1979: the Veliidae was purchased by the University of Copenhagen (ZMUC), the rest was purchased by the Drake bequeath, U.S. National Museum of Natural History (USNM). See Gagné (1985) for a vivid account of the auction. Citations: Grassé (1974) and Razet (1974).

Poppius, Robert Bertil (b. July 28, 1876, Kyrkslatt [Kirkkonommi], Finland; d. Nov. 27, 1916, Copenhagen, Denmark) - Most of collection including types is in the University Zoological Museum, Helsinki (MZHF), although many specimens originally from other museums. Citations: Lavender (1916), Anonymous (1917, 1918), Bergroth (1917), Musgrave (1932), and Carvalho (1983).

Priesner, Hermann (b. Nov. 19, 1891, Linz; d. Aug. 11, 1974) - Published primarily on Thysanoptera, but teamed with A. Alfieri (1951) in publishing a list of the Hemiptera from the Egyptian area. Puton published on a wide variety of heteropteran groups, and he is well known for a series of catalogs (1869, 1875, 1886, 1899). The first edition (1869) was restricted to Europe; the second edition (1875) was broadened slightly to include the Mediterranean basin; editions 3 and 4 (1886, 1899) were further broadened to include the entire Palearctic region. He (1878) also produced a synopsis of the Heteroptera of France. Citations: Anonymous (1913a-c) and Sainte-Claire Deville (1913).
