Neostrachia Saunders, 1877

Neostrachia Saunders, 1877: 103.

Keriahana Distant, 1918: 143-144. (syn. by Leston, 1955 - see comments below)

Type Species: Neostrachia hellenica Saunders, 1877 (= Rhaphigaster bisignatus Walker, 1867), by monotypy. Keriahana: Menida elongata Distant, 1902 (= Menida oblonga Bergroth, 1919), by original designation.

Included Species:

bisignata (Walker)
islamabadensis (Ahmad & Mohammad)
oblonga (Bergroth)

Tribal Placement:

Comments: This genus has had a very confused taxonomic history. Most recent workers have followed Bergroth (1923), in treating Keriahana as a synonym of Menida. At the same time, other workers have considered Neostrachia to be a junior synonym of Apines. Leston (1955), however, placed elongata (type of Keriahana) as a junior synonym of bisignata (type of Neostrachia) without mentioning either genus. More recently, Ahmad (1974), resurrected the use of Keriahana as a valid genus; he treated elongata and bisignata as separate species, but both in Keriahana. If Keriahana and Neostrachia are congeneric, and are taxonomically different from Menida and Apines, then Neostrachia is the senior name. Menida is undoubtedly a large and diverse group of species, desperately in need of revision. The actual status of this group of genera will remain a question until such a revision is completed.
