Ambassadors from the College of Health Professions host children from NDSU’s Center for Child Development for a Great Health Care Adventure

Fargo, N.D., April 6, 2016 – It’s never too early to learn about good health. Ambassadors from the College of Health Professions at NDSU and their advisor Dana Davis know that going for medical treatment can be downright scary if you’re pint-sized. That’s why more than 35 preschoolers and toddlers participated in a Great Health Care Adventure on Wednesday, April 6 in the Nursing Skills Lab in Sudro Hall.

Under the guidance of student ambassadors from the College of Health Professions, the youngsters tried out tools used in health care settings, and took care of puppet patients and mannequins. Everything from stethoscopes to thermometers, adjustable hospital beds and medical gloves provided plenty of learning opportunities.

Ambassador Hannah Rocholl showed one little boy how to listen to his heart, as well as her heart, through a stethoscope.

Through the Great Health Care Adventure, kids in the Center for Child Development learn more about how to be healthy and receive age appropriate information to help make health care settings less scary. It’s part of a three-week health care adventure where children and ambassadors talk about how it feels to be sick or healthy, how to take care of their teeth, and what happens when they visit various kinds of health care settings.

“Going to different settings where health care is practiced can sometimes be intimidating for kids and parents,” said Dana Davis, director of outreach and community engagement in the College of Health Professions. “We help them learn that staying healthy is important and people in health professions are there to help them stay well.”

Ambassador Kortney Schroeder, second year pharmacy student, was interviewed by KVRR-TV and President Hannah Rocholl, second year pharmacy student, was interviewed by WDAY-TV, providing information about how the Great Health Care Adventure teaches kids of different ages the benefits of staying healthy.
