NDSU Health Professions announces faculty leadership roles

North Dakota State University School of Pharmacy and College of Health Professions have advanced four faculty members to leadership positions.

Friesner named Senior Associate Dean

Daniel Friesner, Ph.D., was promoted to Senior Associate Dean of the College of Health Professions effective July 1, 2020. Dr. Friesner serves in this role upon Dr. Cynthia Naughton's retirement on June 30. Friesner will provide administrative oversight for all matters in the College of Health Professions in the absence of the Dean and assist College academic programs.

In addition, Friesner will serve as chief student affairs officer for the College, responsible for all student affairs matters, and satisfying student affairs accreditation standards for the School of Pharmacy, as well as other administrative responsibilities. He previously served as Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Faculty Development. He received his doctor of philosophy degree in economics from Washington State University and bachelor of arts degree in economics from Gustavus Adolphus College.

Friesner’s expertise includes health economics and management science, applied econometrics, business strategy, and outcomes assessment in pharmacy, health care and education. He is a member of the American Pharmacists Association, American Economic Association, Academy of Business Economics, and Association for Institutional Thought.

Werremeyer named Chair of Pharmacy Practice Department

Amy Werremeyer was named Chair of the Pharmacy Practice Department, effective May 1. Werremeyer, PharmD., BCCP, and Associate Professor, joined the faculty at NDSU in 2006. She served as Vice Chair of the Department of Pharmacy Practice from 2013 to 2016 and most recently served as Interim Chair of the Department of Pharmacy Practice since December 2019.

Werremeyer was selected as Pharmacy Teacher of the Year by the NDSU School of Pharmacy in 2019. Her areas of expertise include patient education and medication experiences with psychotropic medications, photovoice and psychopharmacology.

She received her Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees from NDSU and completed a post-doctoral PGY-1 pharmacy practice residency at the VA Medical Center in Fargo. Dr. Werremeyer has practiced as a psychiatry clinical specialist at Sanford South University since August 2006 and is a Board Certified Psychiatric Pharmacist (BCPP). 

She is a member of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, American College of Clinical Pharmacy, College of Neurologic and Psychiatric Pharmacists, the North Dakota Pharmacists Association, and the North Dakota Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists.

Kelsch named Interim Associate Dean

Michael Kelsch, PharmD., BCPS, has accepted the position as Interim Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the School of Pharmacy effective immediately. Dr. Kelsch also serves as Associate Professor of Practice. He will manage all academic affairs matters related to the Pharm.D. program, providing continuity to effectively meet the needs of students during a time of transition, as Dr. Cynthia Naughton, Senior Associate Dean, announced her retirement in June.

Kelsch’s areas of expertise include pharmacy education, academic affairs, infectious disease, immunizations, and internal medicine. He is a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist. His professional memberships include the American Association of College of Pharmacy, American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, North Dakota Society of Health-System Pharmacists, North Dakota Pharmacists Association, and Infectious Diseases Educators Network.

Kelsch received his bachelor’s degree in pharmaceutical sciences and doctorate degree in pharmacy from NDSU. He also completed a post doctoral pharmacy practice residency (PGY-1) at UnityPoint Health - Meriter Hospital/University of Wisconsin School of Pharmacy.

Maack named Vice Chair, Pharmacy Practice

Brody Maack, PharmD, BCACP, was selected to serve as the Vice Chair for the Pharmacy Practice Department. Maack will begins his Vice Chair duties on July 1. His areas of expertise include ambulatory care clinical pharmacy, patient-centered medical home, pharmacy practice clinical service and tobacco cessation.

Maack was recognized at the 2020 Tapestry of Inclusion Ceremony honoring people at NDSU who demonstrate a significant contribution to advancing diversity. As associate professor, he serves as clinical pharmacy specialist at Family HealthCare Pharmacy, NDSU. He also serves as a preceptor, Adult Medicine/Ambulatory Care Clerkship, Family HealthCare Center.

He received his Pharm.D. degree and B.S. degree in pharmaceutical sciences from NDSU and completed his Pharmacy Practice (PGY1) Residency at NDSU/Lake Region Healthcare Corp.
