Invest in the future: why I give

“There’s no greater thing than getting satisfaction out of helping someone succeed,” says John Mortensen, a member of the NDSU School of Pharmacy Advisory Board and 1977 graduate. He is among a group of alumni and students encouraging others to participate in NDSU Giving Day on Tuesday, December 4.

Pharmacy students such as Briana Breemeersch appreciate the support of alumni and friends. “Every donation helps us learn with more and more things. There would be no Concept Pharmacy or anything like that without giving and we really appreciate it,” says Breemeersch.

NDSU Giving Day offers a convenient online opportunity to contribute to help future pharmacists, nurses, allied sciences and public health professionals.

Funds raised on Giving Day support scholarships and enhance programs and student opportunities in the College of Health Professions. Contributions make it possible for students to participate in professional meetings, community service and global opportunities.

An opportunity to make a difference

“I think it’s very important to give back,” says NDSU pharmacy alum David Olig, (’75). “I think it’s important as the students move forward to remember that they got a scholarship—you remember that when you get one, that it’s important to give back.”

NDSU alumna Sally Backman provides scholarships for respiratory care students. “It’s just the gift that keeps giving as far as I’m concerned. Every year we meet a nice young student who has wonderful goals and aspirations. And it’s also an exciting way to stay in contact with our alma mater.”

Radiologic sciences graduate Alex DeMarais (’11) shares that view. “I really enjoy what the program did for me. It allowed me to work in this community,” says DeMarais. “I have my heart at NDSU and it’s great to be back here and give back.”

NDSU supporters and 2017 Service Award recipients Jeanie and Jeffry Volk agree. “NDSU has been so great to us,” says Jeanie Volk, (’76 Nursing). “We just wanted to provide that opportunity for other young students.”

Nursing student Pamela Joyce says donor support helps students chart their futures. “This is the fruit of the generosity of people like you,” says Joyce. “I am here today, strong, positive and hopeful for the future because people like you made it possible.”

“We are grateful for the generous support that our alumni and friends continue to show as they encourage future health care professionals,” says Charles Peterson, dean of the College of Health Professions. “We hope that with your help, we’ll make this our most successful Giving Day thus far.”

As pharmacy alumnus John Mortensen points out, “There’s a lot of places you can donate. There’s a lot of worthy causes. But there’s only one group of Bison.”

We invite you to be part of Giving Day on Tuesday, December 4. Go to https://www.ndsugivingday.com/ and select College of Health Professions to donate to the profession of your choice. Thank you!
