Effective January 1, 2015, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires large employers (50 or more employees), which includes NDSU, to offer health insurance benefits to employees averaging 30 or more work hours per week. This requirement is "employer mandate" of the ACA. NDSU meets this requirement with our benefits-eligible population. Current benefited employees' benefits will not change.
To comply with the ACA and ensure that all NDSU employees who average 30 or more work hours per week are offered health insurance benefits, it is imperative that NDSU departments monitor the employment of - and hours worked by - non-benefit-eligible employees. This federal law affects the student, graduate assistants, temporary, seasonal, part-time academic employees and residence assistants.
