Bringing Dependents

Please note: If you are planning on bringing dependent/s and wish to have them covered through the UnitedHealthcare StudentResources student insurance plan, depending on their arrival date, they may not be eligible for coverage immediately upon arrival. Because of this, we recommend dependents arrive a few days before the start of a semester or within the first two weeks of the start of the semester and that you reserve their coverage in advance of that semester's start date to ensure no gaps in coverage. This will vary by situation, including semester start date, your dependent's arrival dates, and the next insurance policy term coverage start date. Information on how to add dependent coverage and the corresponding important deadlines can be found here: www.ndsu.edu/international/insurance/faq. Please contact UnitedHealthcare directly with any questions on adding dependent coverage.

  • You must be in full-time status.
  • Submit the following documents:

    • Official financial documentation - you must show enough funds for you and each dependent (see Estimate of Expenses in the Admission portion of our website)

  • Submit documents to OIP and wait a week for documents to be reviewed and dependent I-20 to be issued. We will email you when the documents are ready to be picked up.
  • Mail the I-20 and financial documents (bank statements, assistantship letters, etc.) to your dependent(s).
  • Dependents should go to Consulate for visa.
