New Student Setup

Activate your IT accounts

As a new student at NDSU, you need to activate your N.D. University System ID, NDSU electronic ID, and email account to get started using information technology services at NDSU.

Follow the instructions below to activate your accounts.

Step 1: Claim your N.D. University System account

  1. Go to
  2. Click Claim an NDUS Account
  3. Enter your Student ID and 8-digit birthdate in the fields provided.
  4. Click Continue
  5. Check I Agree then click Continue to proceed.
  6. A confirmation message displays indicating that your account has been activated. Click the Continue button again to proceed.
  7. Next, you will be prompted to input a new password.
  8. After new password has been accepted, click Change Password
  9. A dialog box indicating that you have successfully changed your password appears. Click the Continue button to proceed to the next steps.
  10. Next, you will be prompted to select three security questions.
  11. Click Save Answers  A Thank You message appears.
  12. Clicking Continue produces a dialog box that allows you to go back and change your password, or reset the security questions you’ve set up.
  13. Once you have reached this dialog box, you will have completed the process of claiming your NDUS account

This Account is needed for you to login to your Campus Connection.  You would use the User ID given to you in step 6, and the password you created in step 8.

The password for your N.D. University System account expires every 90 days. You will receive an email notification from the N.D. University System when it is set to expire. The notification will include instructions regarding how to change your password.

Step 2: Activate your NDSU electronic ID

To access IT services at NDSU, your NDSU Account (NDSU electronic ID and passphrase) must be activated. Your electronic ID is usually your Firstname.Lastname.

To activate your NDSU Account:

  1. Open a Web browser, and go to
  2. Click Set up your NDSU account, and then enter the following information:


    •     Last Name
    •     Student ID / EMPLID (7-digit ID number)
    •     Birth Month (MM)
    •     Birth Day (DD)
    •     Birth Year (YYYY)


  3. Click I agree to agree to follow university and N.D. University System policies and procedures regarding use of information technology services and electronic resources
  4. Set and confirm a passphrase
  5. Add an email recovery option, and then retrieve the code from your email account to validate it
  6. Optional: Add a phone (SMS) recovery option, and then retrieve the code from your phone to validate it
  7. Click Logout in the top right corner when finished

Step 3: Set up your NDSU email

  1. Go to the Microsoft Office 365 login page (right click to open in a new tab or window)
  2. Enter your NDSU email username (typically
  3. Enter the password associated with your N.D. University System ID.
  4. Click Sign In
    Note: If you receive a message that your account is blocked, you may need to wait for up to 30 minutes after you activated your N.D. University System ID before you can sign into your NDSU email account
  5. An Outlook Web App page should now load, choose your language and Time Zone and click OK to finish
  6. You should now see your Inbox
