New Student Setup

Activate your IT accounts

As a new student at NDSU, you need to activate your N.D. University System ID, NDSU electronic ID, and email account to get started using information technology services at NDSU.

Follow the instructions below to activate your accounts.

If you have questions or need assistance, contact the IT Help Desk at 231-8685 (option 1). 

Step 1: Claim your N.D. University System account

  1. Go to
  2. Click Claim your Account
  3. Take the Acceptable Use Quiz

    1. Click Begin to start the quiz
    2. Complete all 12 of the questions
    3. Click Continue to claim your account

  4. Enter your Date of Birth mm/dd/yyyy

    • mm = The month you were born, use two numbers
    • dd = The day you were born, use two numbers
    • yyyy = The year you were born, use all four numbers
    • make sure you use the / between each

  5. Enter your EMPLID/Student ID
  6. Click Continue
  7. Please answer at least 3 of the authentication questions
  8. Click Continue
  9. Create and Confirm a new password
  10. Click Continue
  11. You will then be notified of your new accountid

This Account is needed for you to login to your Campus Connection.  You would use the accountid given to you in step 11, and the password you created in step 9.

The password for your N.D. University System account expires every 90 days. You will receive an email notification from the N.D. University System when it is set to expire. The notification will include instructions regarding how to change your password.

Step 2: Activate your NDSU electronic ID

To access IT services at NDSU, your NDSU electronic ID (e-ID) must be activated. Your e-ID is usually your Firstname.Lastname.

To activate your NDSU electronic-ID:

  1. Open a Web browser, and go to
  2. Read the State Board of Higher Education Policy 1901.2 and NDUS Procedures 1901.2, and then click Continue
  3. Below I do not know my Electronic ID or password, enter your Last Name and your Student ID/Employee ID (Emplid), and then click Continue
  4. Enter your default password in an Xxx##YYYY format:

    • Xxx are the first three letters of your birth month, with the first letter capitalized
    • ## are the last two digits of your Student ID/Emplid
    • YYYY are the digits of your birth year

  5. Complete the Acceptable Use Policy quiz

    • Click Begin to start the quiz
    • Select the font size that is most easy for you to read, and then click Next

  6. Change your password

    • Enter your old password (default password from above)
    • Enter a new password, and then enter your new password again to verify you have entered it correctly

  7. Select a security question or enter your own, and then enter your answer

Step 3: Set up your NDSU email

  1. Go to the Microsoft Office 365 login page (right click to open in a new tab or window)
  2. Enter your NDSU email address (typically
  3. Enter the password associated with your NDSU electronic ID.
  4. Click Sign In
    Note: If you receive a message that your account is blocked, you may need to wait for up to 30 minutes after you activated your NDSU electronic ID before you can sign into your NDSU email account
  5. An Outlook Web App page should now load, choose your language and Time Zone and click OK to finish
  6. You should now see your Inbox
