Skype for Business (Microsoft Lync)

Microsoft announced it is updating Lync to "Skype for Business" in April 2015. If you have Microsoft Lync installed on your Windows computer, you can expect to see the change as part of the monthly update for Office 2013. If you use Lync online in Office 365, the new Skype for Business user experience will appear for you in the coming weeks.

Skype for Business (formerly Lync) is a communication tool that enables users to keep track of contacts’ availability, send an instant message, and start or join an audio, video or Web conference.

Install Skype for Business / Lync 2013 (for Windows)

  1. Go to the Microsoft Office 365 login page (right click to open in a new tab or window)
  2. Log in using your NDSU email address and password
  3. Click on the gear in the top right corner of the page and choose Office 365 settings
  4. Select Software in the left column, and then click the blue Install button. Click Install and choose Run (if using Internet Explorer) or manually start the installation after the download completes by double clicking the downloaded file
  5. Follow the installation wizard instructions
  6. Once the software is installed and opened, log in with your NDSU email address and password

If you are prompted to enter a product key, please call the IT Help Desk at (701) 231-8685 (option 1) and we will provide one

Install Skype for Business / Lync 2011 (for Mac)

  1. Go to the Microsoft Office 365 login page (right click to open in a new tab or window)
  2. Log in using your NDSU email address and password
  3. Click on the gear in the top right corner of the page and choose Office 365 settings
  4. Click Software in the left column, and then click Lync
  5. Click Install and choose Run (if using Internet Explorer) or manually start the installation after the download completes by double clicking the downloaded file
  6. Follow the installation wizard instructions.
  7. Once the software is installed and opened, log in with your NDSU email address and password
  8. Click Download and install now to install the additional required software
  9. Save and run the downloaded software
  10. Once the software is open again, enter your NDSU email address for both the Sign-in address and User name and enter your password
  11. Click Sign in

Add a Photo to Skype for Business / Lync

You can add your photo to personalize your Office 365 profile and the communication you send. When you use Skype for Business or send an email message, others can see your photo.

When selecting a photo, keep in mind it will be a visual representation of you that may be seen by your colleagues. Professional faculty and staff photos are taken free of charge by NDSU Publications Services.

Upload your photo
  1. Go to the Microsoft Office 365 login page (right click to open in a new tab or window)
  2. Log in using your NDSU email address and password
  3. Click the gear icon in the top right corner, and then choose Options
  4. With the Account tab selected, scroll down and click Edit information
  5. With the Photo tab selected, click Change
  6. Click Choose file, and then browse for and upload your image

It may take up to an hour for the change to take effect in Outlook or Skype for Business / Lync. If the image looks distorted, you may need to resize the original (square dimensions work best) and upload it again.
