Windows XP: Barry Hall Plotting

  1. Open the start menu and click Printers and Faxes. On the window that opens, double click on Add a Printer, which is located in the upper left corner.
  2. Click Next on the wizard welcome screen. Choose the Add a Local Printer option and make sure the Automatically detect… box is unchecked. Click Next.
  3. Select the bubble next to Create a new port. Select Standard TCP/IP Port from the drop down menu next to Type of Port. Then click Next.
  4. Click Next on the welcome screen of the TCP/IP wizard. In the Printer Name or IP Address field, type: “”. This will automatically fill in the Port Name field.
  5. Click Next. It may pause for a while. This is normal. After this it should say the detected device is of unknown type. Just make sure it says “Generic Network Card” in the Standard field and click Next. Click Finish to exit this wizard.
  6. Go to and download the HP DesignJet 5500ps Series PostScript Driver. Either save the file and then find it and run it. Click Browse to select where you want to unzip the driver to. Click unzip to install the driver.
  7. Back on the Add a Printer Wizard, select the Have Disk button.
  8. Click Browse, go to the location that you unzipped the driver to and select the file named “dj5500”. Then Click OK. The window should now show two choices; Select HP Designjet 5500ps 42 PS3 and click Next.
  9. You can name the printer anything you want but we recommend something like “Barry Hall plotter”.  Do not set this as the default printer. Click Next. Make sure the do not share this printer option is selected and click Next. Do not print a test page, just click next. Click Finish to install the printer and exit the wizard.
  10. Go back to the Printers and Faxes window and locate the printer you just set up. Right click on it and select Properties. Go to the Ports tab and click on Configure Port.
  11. Change the protocol to LPR and check the box labeled LPR Byte Counting Enabled. Type “downtown-plotter” in the Queue Name field. Click OK and then Close. The Large Format Printer should now be set up on your computer.
