Hybrid Formula SAE
Formula SAE was formed with the intent of promoting excellence in engineering. It encompasses all aspects of the automotive industry. Team members participate in research, design, manufacturing, test and development as well as marketing, managing and financing of their projects. The first Formula SAE competition took place in Austin, Texas back in 1981. In the 30 years since its inception the competition has grown to include 121 teams with a total of 1742 students participating. In 2006, Hybrid Formula was started by the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth University of Hanover, NH and held its first competition in 2007. Hybrid Formula adds the complexity of combining an internal combustion engine and electric drive system into one drive-train. NDSU SAE added Formula Hybrid to its projects in 2011 and has yet to bring a car to competition.
