Following Makerere University’s approval last month, the ND State Board of Higher Education approved NDSU’s request to offer a Master of Science Degree and Graduate Certificate in International Infectious Disease Management and Biosecurity (DMB) jointly with Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda. The program will team the Veterinary Medicine program at Makerere with the Microbiological Sciences program at NDSU to offer an infectious disease management degree that will provide students from both regions with educational and training experiences in both North Dakota and Uganda. The inaugural class of 8 students—4 from Uganda, 1 from neighboring Ethiopia, and 3 from the US—has already begun their studies with a study abroad course, didactic classes offered in Kampala, and individual experiential projects spanning their 8-week training in Uganda this summer. The new degree program is the first of its kind at NDSU, offering a joint degree in which both institutions will be named on the degree.
