LANDSAT IMAGE OF THE
NORTH-CENTRAL UNITED STATES

Click on the photo for an enlarged image. (73K)

This is a composite image, formed by fusing several, relatively cloud-free LANDSAT satellite images. Included in this composite is the "Red River Valley" image (upper-left corner).

Lake Superior can be seen in the upper-right portion of the image. From Fargo southward, the spoon-shaped zone of gray-black represents sediments associated with the advance of the Des Moines glacial lobe just at the close of the last ice age. The city of Des Moines, Iowa, lies at the southern tip of this zone.
