The outside (cutbank) margins of two, opposing meander loops of the Sheyenne River have approached one another. All that separates them is a neck of land. Cutbank erosion on both of the neck's flanks will soon lead to its being cut off. At that time, the river will divert its channel through the former position of the neck, leaving the abandoned stretch of channel as an oxbow lake.
