Big-headed grasshopper

Adults

  • Foveola triangular.
  • Lateral carinae strongly constricted and marked with white.
  • Often with dark markings on pronotum, markings not clean-cut.
  • Tegmen without transverse bands, but may be spotted with a pale streak on dorsal field.
  • Outer face of hind femur brown with partial dark cross-bands indistinct.
  • Hind tibia blue.
  • Subanal plate of female with a median projection.
Nymphs
  • Highly mottled coloration.
  • Appear exceptionally big-headed as do A. femoratum and P. nebrascensis.
  • Foveola triangular and visible from above.
  • Hind femur with triangular dorsal patch.
  • Nymphs in Spring and early summer.
