Adults

  • Pale stripe from eye to end of pronotum.
  • Hind tibia blue, purple, glaucus, or pink.
  • Male cercus spatulate, broader at base than apex.
  • Subanal plate triangular with a rounded tubecle at apex.
  • Ovipositor with a dorsal tooth- females can only be determined by association.
  • Cannot be separated in the field with certainty from Melanoplus packardii.
    • Aedeagus with ventral lobe protruding at a right angle.
    • A species often associated with sandy soil.
Nymphs
  • Grass green or brown.
  • Body surface with black flecks.
  • Inseparable from M. packardii.
